A word to the wise

"Ask not the Eldar a question, for they will give you three answers, all of which are true and terrifying to know." - Inquisitor Czevak Turns out, the answers are; "Oh, just a few days", "Our friends will be here shortly" and "We have quite the appetite".

Warp Spider Phoenix Lord - Complete!

### UPDATE: 9/05/2017 - There have been numerous folks seemingly with their panties in a twist over this model - It is NOT for sale, I am making no profit, cashing in, etc etc - The model is purely appropriated (at considerable personal expense) to fill a gap and create a unique stand out piece that makes this project that little bit more unique than it already is. Thank you to all those who have been supportive over the last two decades, you're why this project is still going. In regards to GW IP, this page exists to remind everyone it is in NO means a challenge to GW. If anything it should flatter the company that a fan would go to these extreme measures of commitment to exhibit just how much enjoyment they've had with ensuring the pointy space elves don't go extinct. ###

Ok, so now that the beast is done, I'll spend a little more time explaining exactly how this model came into being. Most of you are probably wondering "why" for some aspects of this... aspect.. heh. Some items are glaringly obvious, others not so much... there is a rhyme and reason to it though.

We will start with the general concept and go into the defining features, then onto the "different" bits.

Many of you are familiar with the lore based Lhykosidae concept Wraith (Warp) Spider from the Eldar Prophecy novel - The name coming from the Wolf Spider's scientific description... almost verbatim. This model is an attempt at creating that embodiment - complete with eight limbs! Ultimately, the model was going to be slightly less typical of a suit wrapped around a humanoid figure, with more emphasis on a 60/40 creature balance than the other way around. The idea being the creature drives the suit and gives off that creepy feeling rather than just some fancy "guy".

One typical feature of Eldar Phoenix Lords is their "fabulously" large heads, or very distinctive styling exhibited in the head/shoulder pads/weaponry. This model is no exception. The head was streamlined, given a sinister narrowed glare and mandibles to suit - think camel spider, yet exaggerated.

The backpack, typically being large and bulky, was going to be a challenge as the armatures would have to be exceedingly long to prevent the miniature from looking chunky and encumbered despite teleportation capabilities. It was decided to incorporate the backpack into the suit. With the vent ports built into the front and sides of the flexing armour structure, had to be thinned to move with the ebb and flow if the model was to look manoeuvrable enough. Webway nodules, as seen on normal backpacks were still included (shoulders) to keep that distinctive link.

Given the Wraith Spider concept, it was decided that grenades would be "grown" out of the thigh plates through the Wraithbone itself. This saved having a bunch of dangly bits to cast individually given the already complex structure requirements. A slightly armoured carapace around the shoulders was also incorporated to tie back the typical Phoenix Lord exaggerated styling - a Warp Spider shrine rune was incorporated into one side, with a giant spirit stone on the other.

The main weapon was a tricky design... most have a pipe leading back to the backpack itself, however with so many armatures, this was going to get very tangled with all those arms moving about. Instead, the design for a relic weapon, which incorporated its own power source was chosen... making it long, similar to a spinnerette rifle - however, as with most Phoenix Lords, an integrated double edged power axe was added giving the option of either hacking the bejesus out of its target, or going full "Chopper Reid" with a well placed armature shanking. This guy would have a ball in H-Division.

The armatures were to be a defining feature, bringing the model up to eight limbs for a spider like appearance. Each blade however, needed to be reaching, scything (as a true power blade should) and powered. The nodules joining the blade to the armature were given a wraithbone organic look with gems to act like capacitors... or if you like... poison glands (flexibility was considered).

Overall, a stylistic approach was considered at every turn to ensure this beast could move like one, change tactic on the fly and while remaining unique, incorporate as much of the existing Warp Spider feel without being clunky - it had to be the ultimate form of a fast and deadly creature.

Steve and I have been in talks as to how this model will come to life once cast in white metal, let's just say the speed, evasiveness and accurate evisceration of its target will be represented in true cinematic styling.

The A-Team - Warp Spider Phoenix Lord Concept

So some of you have asked where this gem came from. Well, it has been a consortium effort... made up of the following;

1. Addinarr from Deviantart - The original concept mastermind. I found Addinarr's artwork many years ago and kept the photo in my archives for future reference. Sadly, I didn't know who the creator was back then. Thanks to reverse image search these days, I tracked him down to ask permission to turn his concept into a model. Ok... so the model had been started before hand - all the same he was kind enough to say "You definitely have the approval".

2. Mariano Pagotti - With the help of a good mate, I was connected with Mariano to see the sculpt imagined. After the first image forming the body, I knew it was going to work, Mariano was the guy to do it.. and then some.

3. Steve from Third Fate Creations - By now you would know of Steve's insanely good air brushing skills and knack for creating some incredible cinematic effects. Steve has been the man in charge of seeing my Super Heavy War Machines brought to life (from the Vampire Raiders/Hunter, to assorted Titans of various sizes).

Steve has contacted me asking for a crack at the cinematics... and given our discussions today... well, regardless of which direction chosen, the beast is going to look amazing. As much as I'd love to blurt these concepts out, perhaps a little patience on my part may be worth it for everyone :)

Stay tuned...

Warp Spider Phoenix Lord - Update #4

And now we start to see the beast in all its glory - one or two minor adjustments to the model and it will be finished... ready to find a commissioned artist to do the final touches. Thrilled? That's an understatement... Mariano has nailed this commission 10 fold over.

Warp Spider Phoenix Lord - Update #3

Mariano has been hard at work, developing the "spider" limbs. Now we're starting to see the more menacing details appearing with two of the four armatures, with power blades fixed, akin to scything/grappling talons for mobility and offensive capabilities. Coupled with its Phoenix Lord spinnerette rifle, I'd hate to be the designated target this thing goes after.

Now, on to the goodies!

Warp Spider Phoenix Lord WIP - Update #2

Mariano, not 30 minutes ago has improved my Monday ten fold with these recent WIP photos :)

With the integrated "Warp Jump Generator" now part of the suit, the first shoulder guard pieces down and head formed, small pincers (not shown) will goon after the next baking phase.

The holes in the back and side of the torso will be where the scything talon style armatures will lock in, adding quad power blades into the mix.

One of the scything power blades to be hooked into the integrated Warp Jump Generator.

Note, the weapons are still WIP, now that the general shape has been formed.

Stay tuned for the next update! Weapons and shoulder plates to be added soon.

Video Update: The "unboxed" so far...

Again, please excuse the lighting - the macro of a camera phone is probably the worst thing to use for something like this. More lighting to go in the top and bottom to "fill" the case, not just the shelves. If you want the high resolution images of what is here on the shelves, check the rest of the site as all the individual goodies are here (including the ones not unboxed yet!). Enjoy!

Commissioned Sculpt - Warp Spider Phoenix Lord WIP

When a miniature doesn't exist that you know is needed to make an already comprehensive Warhost that little more complete, what do you do? Put the feelers out for the best sculptors you can get your hands on and see what happens.

Well, something did happen, or I should say... is happening. Meet the WIP Warp Spider Phoenix Lord Mariano Pagotti is working on.

After a number of concept art pieces were submitted to Mariano, an agreement was made to see how badarse the elusive model could be manifested to life. Afterall, no one likes anything done by halves in this hobby.

So, with the cat out of the bag... or spider in this case, stay tuned for updates as this little ball of hurt grows into one of the missing pieces so wished for over the years.

Lights, Camera...

Phase two complete... well almost. Lights have been added to the display case as the boxes are unpacked onto the shelves, which are filling up very quickly. Somehow, believe it or not the case will hold around 2400 miniatures - War Machines included. At the moment, there are roughly 1600 painted miniatures, with about 800 left (80% of those off to Titan Miniatures, with the remainder to my existing commissioned artists - the awesome bunch they are!).

I'll admit, the first time I flicked the lights on, it was in "disco" mode, which, had I been epileptic... I'd have been in serious trouble. Perfect if you like to break out the glow sticks and party hard though, which I've been told the Eldar do a little too well *cough*Slannesh*cough*.

One more strip along the top to get light down through the shelves and all will be ready for the glass doors - then the Titans can go up. For those of you shouting "why not now?!", if any of you have had little people in the house, you will know pretty things demand touching, and while mine is pretty good all said and told... I'd rather not play the role of hostage negotiator with one of a kind Titans ;)

And as a bonus round, I had a dig through all my old Armorcast stuff on the weekend - this is a small portion of it, however I thought it may be worthy of a photo (note, half the Phantom and its addon kit is at a mates place). Yes that kit at the front is the ultra rare Bright Stallion Knight prototype.

The Dras'Volharr - Permanent House Guests

*Updated! 20/03/2017

So I got sick of all the whining about "I can't see the TV", "Hey, Sputnik, got your head out of the way!", "Have you got any more snacks, or what?", deciding to build a display case in the living room... one where the aforementioned outbursts from the Dras'Volharr Craftworlders would be put to rest.

Somehow, in buying the house, I got lucky... and by lucky, I mean a double brick wall recess designed to hold over 100k of Eldar miniatures... seriously, its as if the space was destined for it. Guessing one of the Farseer's picked up on this upon inspection.

After 12 months, searching high and low for a builder to do the job, furniture stores who may have had a solution etc - I gave up and started looking into how I could do the job myself. Two months later, multiple trips to IKEA, Bunnings, Jaycar and making a few connections in China... all the parts are ready (or in transit).

*Many holes were drilled this day...

A wall space of 3.6m wide, 2.45 high and 55cm deep has been turned into an 8.1m2 display area. Each plexiglass shelf sporting its own LED strip lighting, wardrobe style glass lockable doors and storage space below and above for the full Warhost to be seen, oooh'ed and ahhhh'd over while playing Dawn of War 3 on the UHD TV (well... that's my nice little dream come April 27th).

*Note, the 4mm difference is now levelled... much grumpiness went into it

For a while now I've had people asking to see the full lot out on display and I've never had the space to do so... not to mention the time involved in unpacking so many miniatures - This is the kind of thing I'd like to limit in my lifetime. On the upside, it will give me back my fourth bedroom as a spare room, meaning if I've been naughty in buying the latest miniature for the Eldar collection I don't have to sleep on the couch haha (actually, I've never had this problem, bar the odd eye rolling moment).

*A Vampire Raider and Wraithknight for scale - Good times.

Ideally, I would like to have this all sorted out in the next month. With any luck, it will be ready before I kick off the next set of commissions with Titan Miniatures, so they have a space to return to once finished other than the back spare room!

And let's not forget Helge and the upcoming work for the battlescape... he has certainly not been forgotten in all of this ;)

Update: The shelves are now being populated!
